Just cancelled a motor policy (lease car returned) and paid a £56 cancellation charge. Had been previously told there was no cancellation charge if this was done online. Daylight robbery!

    Who told you that?

If it was Aviva, was it in writing or a phone call?

End of May I recieved renewal letter for my car insurance and low and behold it dropped by a penny a first.
The new renewal cost £275.00 ok fine so I left the letter and would phone nearer the day 1st of June.
The renewal letter got knocked being my desk and I totally forgot, thankfully I don't use the car much. But on the 8th June received feedback email wanting to know how Aviva had done and why I was leaving, signing in to my acc sure enough ins had expired 1 June.
So got in touch and because it was a weekend and my call went through to south Africa, explained to the women but she said because it had expired more than 7 days I was classed as new business and the new price £625.00.
Told her to forget it and phoned Monday mid morning and surprise surprise got SA,tried again and got Scotland, I was infirmed most of the calls get picked up by SA. Anyhow the man looked into my account and I knew I was going to get nowhere when the hello Im your mate attitude turned to sorry Sir there is nothing I can do your classed as new business. I'm not a business should be a customer.
I explained my wife has her car insured and house and contents with Aviva.
OK I know people are going to say its my fault and totally agree as a 71 year old who is getting nearer the top of the Grim Reapers to do list I foolishly thought years of being with Aviva might count for something, got the same cover for £9.00 (£284.00) more with the RAC.
So to end this epic tale Aviva could have sent me a email on the day of renewal, but am I bitter to true shower of -------
fill in as you see fit anyhow had my rant feel better for that.

The term "new business" doesn't indicate if you are a consumer or business customer, both are revenue/business to them, but simply says you are a new sale rather than a renewing sale. Has some impacts in the dark art of actuarial analysis etc.

Ultimately this is the argument for having auto-renewal turned on, so if you do forget it's a safety net. Given the Continuous Insurance Enforcement requires all vehicles to either be insured or SORNed an offence was committed for the 7 days without cover even if it wasnt driven.
