Loveholidays charging an extotionate £497 to amend passenger first name

Inadvertently I used my sons girlfriends nickname on the initial booking with Loveholidays for our holiday in August.

When uploading passport details to United Airlines they would not accept her passport so I asked Loveholidays to alter her first name and have been told that I have to pay a fee of £497 for this.


Can I complain to ATOL? or who do I go to to get this changed to a reasonable non extortionate fee?

They have said that I will lose £3000 if I cancel, and I have a remaining £3000 to pay.

Can anyone help please?

Do you know what proportion of that is what the airline charges for your ticket type?

United Airlines will charge for both legs of the journey. Won't be cheap.

The trip is in August. Flight tickets have not even been issued yet.  How do they justify such an extortionate fee to amend a first name of a passenger, even if it is for both legs of the journey.

Love holidays are just passing on the costs to them.

Your mistake, your cost, your issue is probably with United airlines

If, as you claim, the tickets have not yet been issued, then to which booking were passport details being uploaded?

United Airlines allows name changes up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure for a fee of $200. For minor name corrections, contact United Airlines within 24 hours of booking for no fee. Beyond 24 hours, the fee is $75. Know more about United Airlines name change policy passengers can call +1-800-864-8331 or

United Airlines allows passengers to correct misspellings and legal name changes. Here are the details:

1. Minor Name Corrections (No Additional Fees):

• Spelling correction in first or last name.
• Addition or removal of prefix/title.
• Correction of inverted first and last names.
• Adding or removing a nickname.
• Exclusion or inclusion of the middle name.

Unfortunately, in your case, you have booked via a third party and likely have to go through them. 
But directly with United, the cost would be either US$75 or US$200. If it were me, I would contact United directly to see what they can do.

When I  contacted them they said they cannot amend the name as the tickets have not been issued by Loveholidays. 
They can amennd them after they receive the the issued tickets.

However, United do have our details already on their system as this is where I started uploading our passport details and then realised that the nick name I had typed in will not allow her passport to upload, so that was when I contacted both to find out how to amend her nick name to her passport/given name.

So then you don't have an issue. You can get it done once the tickets have been issued.
BUT....if the tickets have not yet been issued, then for what are loveholidays attempting to charge you? Amending a nickname on a booking that hasn't yet been ticketed? Scammers? Get on to them and highlight this thread to them. Perhaps they will change their tune.
