Thanks for reply. It's the rac. How does the AA book a tow? One person at rac says it can only be booked 24hrs before appointment at the garage but another said it can be done in advance.0

The cover only applies where you have a policy before the breakdown occurs. You can't breakdown and then look at the T's and C's to try and work out the best deal as neither will recover you for a pre existing breakdown which is what this sounds like.
Well I think they might now but at a similar cost to ringing around and asking for recovery quotes from other businesses offering that service.
