Insurance company got back with additional payout nearly 6 yrs after write-off. Is this for real?

My elderly Mum pranged her car 6 yrs ago & it was written off. She had a payout, kept the car, having it repaired and moved on. 6 years later she's received a letter & cheque saying she's owed more money from the insurance company - who she's still with (Direct Line). She's suspicious and hasn't banked it yet. The letter looks ok on the surface. I've told her to call the number on her own policy if she wants to check it out & she probably will. In the meantime, has anyone else heard of this happening so long after the event and completely unsolicited?

Yes. There was another thread about this the other day.
Seems the ins co undervalued the cars.Life in the slow lane1 -
The FCA instructed DLG to review a couple of years worth of customer write offs with a view of compensating certain customers who'd had their vehicles undervalued. Like most of these things they had to do it proactively hence the random cheque1

Why would a cheque be suspicious? What bad things does she imagine might happen if she banks it?0
