STAR   type interviews can be a poisoned chalice for  the internal candidate

" tell me aobut a time you did  x,y,z "   especially if they  want currency i n the example and you;ve been part of that team  / site / division for a number of years  and  even then  your  recollection / understanding of  what you  did  might not match that of the interviewers - and while they  say it  won;t impact  the scoring it does

The secret to advance in many organisations who use similar recruitment methods, is to learn how to be good at their style of interviews and answering their questions in the way they want. Volunteer to be on interview panels, and see the process from the other side of the desk, and absorb as much as you can.

Personally those methods may be fair but I hate them especially Civil Service recruitment, as its a fantastic process for finding people who are great at interviews and writing applications, not necessarily that they will be good at the job.

I do well in ones where you just get asked if you can do the job and can evidence it 'normally'...

I don't understand what this means really - there are lots of "normal" ways of interviewing. How does the way you have been interviewed vary from what you would like the interview to be like?

Have you asked for feedback, and what does that say?

The problem is that "neurodiverse" isn't a set menu - everyone is different, so what one person struggling with ADD might experience will be totally different from what others with the same challenges experience. So to really give you any meaningful advise we need to understand more about the issue.
Competency based/ STAR format interviews are very hard if you are neurodiverse. You often have to be really clear within the STAR format to pass. I have ADHD and ASD, I find them hard because I tend to need to give the context/ backstory to a scenario to get it right in my head when nervous. This means people on the panel can miss the key details to score you well in the rest of the extraneous details. When you are working in a pressured personal context it can lead to a bit of verbal diarrhea which does not help either. You can ask for reasonable adjustments in many places - but frankly even in the civil service the understanding of why you may want them is far from ideal. There is a big reticence to share questions in advance in some teams - which is often a helpful adjustment. Others do not like to give extra time. So you often do not get a consistent interview experience anyway.

    It's a bit poo.

I'm afraid you aren't the first, and won't be the last, to get a job you have done for an extended period as 'temporary cover'.  A colleague of my wife was in a similar situation, getting great appraisals and even bonuses for the way they did the job.  When it was finally advertised they were told they couldn't apply for it as they didn't have a university degree.  Their history in the job carried no weight at all.
They were fortunate in that they found a job with another company not long after.  At their exit interview he was asked why he was leaving!
