Memory Configuration of Toshiba Tecra 8000

Hi

As some of you know I have just acquired a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop via freecycle and want to look at upgrading mempry and os.

This is for someone else, so whilst I don't mind spending time on it I don't want to spend too much money

I've got a win2000 cd on its way to me :) but will need to upgrade the memory. I may know of someone who has a couple of old PCs I can raid the memory from.

The unit apparently has 128mb of ram. Is this likely to be 2x 64mb, or 1x 128? Obviously I this is important as if all the available ports are taken up then I need to replace all the memory, whereas if there is a spare port I only need to add.

Thanks

  • Could be either configuration, just unscrew the memory cover and take a look.
The data sticker will hopefully still be on the RAM then you can make a note of the type needed.
Do a search for manuals online and you should find a PDF user guide for this laptop.

PS: Laptops have a different type of Ram than Desktops so raiding a PC will be of no use to you.

Transfer it across (if laptop not on line) via usb ,cd or whatever.
It will tell you memory and how many/how much.

Firstly, don't expect to be able to use desktop PC memory in a laptop. The latter tend to use SODIMM modules, the former (typically) do not.

There are probably utilities out there that can figure out how many modules of what size you have, but you're going to have to open it up anyway, and it's usually only 2 screws.

Best bet is then to go onto the Crucial.com website to see what type of memory you need, then look around and see whether their price is good or can be bettered. 7dayshop.com have some great prices on laptop memory, but I ~think~ they may not have a spec old enough to fit your Tosh.

    I've had a look

    There are 2 x 64mb cards.

They are each around 3 inches wide with 4 ICs on each side, I assume each IC represents 8mb of memory.

I would assume that I would need to replace both with 128mb cards, if this is possible??

Alternitively would win2k work with 128mb?

  • I have had a look at your laptop spec and I would not put anymore than 256mb inside as I don't think that the MBcan take it.

Is there anymore information stickers on the ram in your laptop?

I've just checked the link that someone posted to system reqs for win2k and xp. It appears that I can run either with the 128mb if I want to, so I may be sticking with what I've got unless a 128mb or two fall into my lap.

At £30 odd to replace what is in there its not feasable as this is for someone else as a free pressie. TBH I don't think the machine would fetch £30 on e bay, even with the extra memory!

If the recipient - my tenant, wants to upgrade or change it later then that's up to him. I'm a bit of a softie for helping out people who could use the help and in turn make sure people's efforts don't go to waste.

This gent is one such example. He'll run it and play with it for all it's worth then eventually he may want something better, by which time he'll have saved enough to go out and buy it.

A couple of years ago I changed the bath for him and found that the old one had been repaired. When I commented on this he casually remarked that it had split so rather than bother me he went out and bought a fibreglass kit and fixed it himself. If he had told me I would have been only too pleased to change it then.

When I refitted the kitchen he helped me remove the old kitchen into the communual courtyard and even organised for the council to come and take it away.
