Child DLA

Hi,
We are in receipt of child DLA, the entitlement letter states child will receive DLA until Oct 2025. Although he reaches 16 in Oct but he is late school leaver so still in year 10. Will be in year 11 from Sept.
I received a letter from DWP stating as my child is turning 16 he will need to apply for PIP. They asked me to reply by 24 June.
I thought because the child is late school leaver, his DLA will continue until next year? His DLA letter also states DLA payments up to Oct 2025.
Thanks

If you / he fails to apply for PIP, his disability benefits will not continue past the deadline indicated in the letter. Being a 'late school leaver' is irrelevant.

Ok thank you. Why would it say on the DLA award notice claim will continue until Oct 2025? DWP would have been aware that he will react 16 in Oct this year. They just gave a wrong impression.

I'm not so well versed with DLA and moving over to PIP but I'd have thought the extra year is to give DWP time to get through the backlogs and assess his PIP claim before his DLA stops.
He will have to claim PIP and have the form sent back by the deadline(s) given, though.2 -
I will send the forms back. The forms they are asking it's just if you would like to apply for PIP and if there would be an appointee. He cannot manage his finances himself so they will be an appointee.
I am right in saying someone will visit from DWP before appointee can be approved? What questions are asked?
And how long the whole process takes for PIP decision. Sorry not gone through all this and I have wasn't expecting it either.
Thanks0 -
Yes, a DWP rep will likely visit you at home to put the appointee in place and for you to sign the forms. From memory and it was back in 2017 that this happened to me for my daughters PIP claim. They were at my house for about 15 minutes. They just explained the process and what was expected of me and then I signed the forms.
A decision on the PIP could take anything up to several months, maybe less. I don't know what you weren't expecting it because DLA is only for those up to the age of 16, once they reach this age they need to claim PIP.0 -
We have just gone through the exact same thing. proper stressfull0

Worth noting that the criteria for PIP are different from DLA, so it would probably be useful to have a read up about PIP.
Short overview here - do read the PDFs linked within the page https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/pip/help-with-your-claim/how-decisions-are-made/
Slightly longer going through each question https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/pip/help-with-your-claim/fill-in-form-pip/
And full guidance - a long read but worth it to know the scope of each activity that's assessed https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/personal-independence-payment-assessment-guide-for-assessment-providers/pip-assessment-guide-part-2-the-assessment-criteria1
