Can this manhole cover handle be repaired?

Part of my manhole cover handle popped off today. It's still attached on the otherside but it's worn a bit too and probably will pop off. Are there modifications I could make or a way to repair it?

Tape over it so the doggies don't get caught on a popped up piece of metal 😀

Thanks

must have been like that a fair wile going by the dirt/algal growth on the broken concrete faces
don't the doggies catch themselves in the central hole anyway?

is it literally a straight bar, no bends at the end buried deeper into the concrete?

Obviously you could chip out a bit of concrete to create a slightly deeper and wider channel (to ensure better adhesion to "fresh" faces of the old concrete) and then re-bed in fresh concrete but I would never trust it beyond lifting it a few mm to enable the cover to slide off sideways given how shallow that bar has been set in the first place if there is nothing bedding it deeper at the ends. Hardly surprising the concrete has broken off and the bar is loose.

Certainly never support the whole weight just off that bar alone

I guess resin will be the strongest, and easiest, solution.
You'd need to abrade the concrete under the bar at the broken end, and I'd do that all the way over to the edge of the round central hollow, which is where I presume your lifting hand goes?
Anything should do - just hack and chip away until the concrete underneath is clean and rough. Then get a tube of 2-part resin from SF or similar, and apply it firmly to the concrete, weigh the bar down into it, and then cover with more resin. As it sets, shape it to suit the surrounding concrete.
  • Yeah book worm I suspect it's 19 years old 😀 I take it up regularly just to keep it clean and prevent blockages but it seems well vacuumed in this time.

I agree with you, it looks like it's seen better days a long time ago and surprisingly the bar is super straight! It doesn't have to go far if I can get it up.  I was thinking of chipping it good shout thank you
  • Thanks ThisIsWeird. I will look into the resin solution, sounds good! That's where your hand goes and you've a 50% chance of a graze as you can imagine 😬

I was half thinking of getting a replacement in but if I can get away with a cheaper repair I'd opt for that so thank you both

If you can't get a new lid, drill through the old one and fit an eye-bolt.
  • Great idea thank you Vortigern! 😀 I

If you have access to a suitable drill and bit get yourself  a couple of zinc plated mending plates and some suitably sized nuts, bolts and washers.
Place the mending plate so that it straddles the bar and holds it in place, might as well do both ends at same time.

Roofing or dome headed bolts would present less off a trip hazard.
