Toyota servicing

Hi, I bought a new Toyota Yaris last June. It comes with a 3 year warranty and then if you get it serviced using official toyota parts every 12 months, you get an extra years warranty upto 10 years.

My car is due for servicing end of this month. The cost of getting it serviced at the main dealership is £230 for a minor service. If I get it serviced at the main dealership the hybrid battery service is included within their servicing price. In order to be eligible for the hybrid battery warranty it has to be serviced every year, and can only be done by Toyota.

My query is, it worth getting the car serviced at the Toyota garage, and if so for how many years please? I'm tempted to get it serviced at a local garage who use official toyota parts and then the battery service done by Toyota, as it's much cheaper than using the dealership.

I can take out a service plan with Toyota but this is still very expensive, compared to reputable local garages. Thank you

I took out a service plan when I bought my Yaris cross last year, I will use the dealer for servicing for as long as I keep the car, for me it’s peace of mind although, I’m not sure what will be classed as wear and tear in say seven years + , and it will probably depend on which dealer you use.

The Toyota service warranty is effectively a manufacturer warranty, so if anything goes wrong (rather than wears out) Toyota will fix it, which could potentially cost/save you thousands.

On the other hand Toyota have a reputation for not going wrong (except famously, the D4D, and Toyota fitted loads of new engines under warranty).

FWIW, I'm wasting hundreds a year getting my Suzuki serviced for the Service Activated Warranty (and the stamp in the book), normally I'd be servicing it myself for the cost of the oil & filter by now.

To benefit from the Toyota Relax warranty AFTER the initial 3 year warranty you must get it serviced at Toyota.

Have you asked the Toyota dealer if they will carry out the Hybrid Health Check if another garage has serviced the vehicle?

Have they quoted a cost for that?

Having had several Toyota hybrids, I would advise sticking with the dealer.

It's a no brainer, get it serviced at Toyota until it no longer qualifies for the Toyota Relax warranty.

You will need to get it serviced anyway and part of it's service schedule is a hybrid battery check,
Outside of the Toyota Relax warranty, servicing/checking the battery each year is required for Toyota's 15 year hybrid battery warranty.

So going outside of the network your car will still require a battery check/service, which you'll need to find some that can do it and pay for that but you won't get any warranty benefit from it.

It's the same with the rest of the car.
It needs servicing anyway and you may pay a little less at a local garage but you'll lose what is quite a major benefit, like a decade/100,000 mile of warranty.

What would the cost be to buy a similar warranty for that period?
I would guess a similar third party warranty would cost you thousands over that period and what would you really save each year for local to service it, £80 or so.
Also would that third party warranty cover the hybrid battery for the same period? These batteries costs thousands.

All you need is the service schedule checks and replacements done by a Toyota dealer that are specified on the service schedule, the normal stuff like all the checks, oil, filters etc.

When it comes to further work they might find, like brakes etc you can take it to whomever you like and get them done much cheaper.

My colleague has been running her 2016 Yaris Hybrid like this from day one.
All the scheduled servicing by her Toyota dealer and she takes it somewhere else for all the things like brakes.
Her dealer soon cottoned on and now tries to match them for price, sometimes they can, sometimes they can't but it's win win for her.

Her little Yaris is pushing 165,000 miles on the clock, so it's now well outside the Relax warranty but it still runs like a Swiss watch and she's had no big bills, just normal service items.

The only warranty claim in all that time was for some rear wheel bearings as they failed within a couple of years.
They replaced them without quibble which I was quite surprised at, usually they would just say tough, they wear out.

i would also use the Toyota dealer, you say it’s £231 for the service, how much would you be saving going elsewhere compared to how much it could potentially cost if you have a problem and Toyota say no

Recently bought a Yaris hybrid and although the costs are higher in has to be worth using main dealer to get the extended warranty. There's no doubt that I'll be paying the extra to get the cover

I've had 3 different Toyotas over 8 years but I think their service plan is a con. 
If you sign up to monthly direct debits, which I did, you end up paying for servicing you don't receive over especially if, like me, you change your car after 3 years.
This is usually before the 3 years is up so you have paid for servicing on your third year which you never receive as you pick up a new car and you start at 0 again.
I'm thinking of moving manufacturers this time only because the franchise is over an hours drive away and it's too far.
I recently cancelled my DD as new garage will take my Toyota off my hands. I emailed the garage and asked for a refund but have heard nothing!
My advice would be to always use Toyota servicing but, if you can pay as a one off when you get the service done.
