First Direct Account - Maintaining Payee Details

Having opened a new Principality BS account, I added the new details to the three existing PBS account payee details I have set up (same Name, Sort, Account and differing reference).
This new payee has overwritten one of the existing PBS payee entries. Thinking I'd made a mistake or there was an app glitch, I've tried again online to add the overwritten details back in - again an existing entry has been overwritten.
The text description from this entry has also overwritten all the other PBS descriptions.
Has this functionality changed recently? If not, how did I add three distinct PBS payees before this week?

Were the three payee details to PBS originally set up as part of a standing order rather than just setting them up as a payee?

Previously when I've edited the reference on a payee, a new payee has been created, leaving the original payee unchanged.1

That's not how it's worked in the past for me either. In the days I was using Chip with Open Banking, I built up loads of payees with the same sort code and account number.
