Mis sold fragrance

Options
I went into Boots and asked to smell a couple of perfumes. I finally decided on a Jean Paul Gaultier one. The lady took out a packaged one, put it through the till and in the bag. It was a present for my partner which I gave to him that midnight. When he opened the tin I saw it was the wrong coloured bottle. The salesperson gave me the wrong one. As the seal is broken will Boots refund me because I’ve since checked on the boots website and they don’t do the big bottle in the fragrance I wanted to purchase. I spent £100 and I’m so anxious I’ll be stuck with a fragrance which I didn’t choose

    What does the receipt say?

Is the bottle you have the same as on that receipt?

Does your partner like the perfume that they actually have?
If so, as this was a gift to them from you, the moment won't be spoiled by them keeping the perfume they actually have.
I assume both perfumes would be the same price / you paid the correct price for the perfume provided.

If it's the same design bottle and just a different colour then it will be the same fragrance but will just be a different format.

On Boots.com the only £100 option at the moment is a black stripy version of Le Male which also comes in mid blue/grey stripy bottle for slightly less. The black version is a perfume whereas the blue/grey is an eau de toilette, they should smell almost the same but the perfume will be stronger smelling and last longer as they have 50-100% more of the actual oils that make the scent.

So that's the theory, but personally I find that EDT and EDP of the same fragrance tend to smell a bit different on me - usually different notes of the fragrance get emphasised after the dry down, which then linger.

For example I love (as a woman) wearing Givenchy Gentleman EDT which smells fresh and cucumber-y and gets me compliments, but the EDP version ends up smelling a bit woody, and not in a good way.  Chanel mademoiselle is the other way round, the EDP is one of my favourite perfumes, but I can't stand the EDT

In any case the sealed tin should have said what was inside (perhaps a label on the bottom) personally I always double check what I'm buying as perfume packaging can look so similar with a different product inside.

Does your partner like the fragrance though, that's the important bit.

The "on me" is also a critical point, the same fragrance does smell differently on different people. In many places they spray a bit of card, you wave it to remove the alcohol, smell it and buy if you like it or dont if you dont. You then get home, use it and it doesn't smell exactly the same. In a decent perfumery once you've narrowed it down they'll tell you to apply it, go away for 45 minutes and then decide if you like it or not; obviously this is more difficult if its a present for someone else.

I dont disagree that the difference can be a little more than strength when first applied but tend to find most even out after wearing for a little while (excluding fashion brands that tend to have totally dissipated after a little while like Davidoff Cool Water -v- Creed Green Irish Tweed which its a knock off of)

I never buy fragrance off the basis of the card test, always after trying it at least three times. I find a more accurate representation of the fragrance can be achieved by smelling the bottle rather than a freshly spritzed card.

I have a ffern subscription, and they supply a mini sample bottle so the fragrance can be tried several times before opening the main bottle... And if you don't like it, you return the sealed main bottle for a refund.

Thanks for that.  I hadn’t heard of ffern so looked at their website, it was very interesting.

I'm curious - assuming you bought the right fragrance what would you expect to happen if your partner didn't like it? Even if it is the wrong one (and from what others have said I'm not sure it is) surely if your partner likes it then it really doesn't matter?
