UTR Query

Options
Hi I occasionally undertake sole trader freelance work (alongside my full-time employment). My question is I've been asked to undertake a one off freelance piece of work for a company and they've requested my UTR number to process future payment.   I don't have any issue supplying this if it's absolutely necessary, but just curious as to what they do with it - as never been asked before (HMRC say not to share this).  What will they do or see in HMRC when they check the UTR - do they see my whole personal and self assessment information as it's all linked to that UTR number.

Sounds shady to me. The only reason you might need to share a UTR with an employer is if you are are subcontractor working under the Construction Industry Scheme. If you are not working under the Construction Industry Scheme, then they have no need or use for your UTR. If they say they need it, ask them what for, and what system it will be entered into.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
