New Dell arrived....now what?

OK, nice new Dell arrived. I've got connected to the internet. A year's McAfee. Is that sufficient or do I need to look at help2go.com and get anything else?

Also, is there any Dell crap that I need to take off?

For a start if it was me personally I'd take off McAfee and go with ANY of the free alternatives before I'd use McAfee.
I.e. AVG, Avast or Antivir. Also Comodo or zonealarm for firewall and superantispyware.

For a paid for all in security suite go for either Kaspersky Internet Security 7 (better detection) or Eset Smart Security (smaller resource footprint).

  • If you go the free route look here from a previous post of mine

"AVG Professional for free, well 12 mths - https://www.computeractive.co.uk/avg/index

    Found on Computer Active website.

    Download available until the 17th Jan 08 - direct link - http://www.vnudownloads.com/avg7_503a1171_vnu.exe"
  • Also have a look at this http://pcdecrapifier.com/
  • Thanks guys.

I have AVG on my other puter + comodo & search and destroy and it works fine.

Are you saying turn McAfee off and don't even use it for the free year?
  • turn it off and unistall it. there is a tool to make sure it is gone for good - http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner

As reluctant says, uninstall it. I know the money saver in you wants to use up the "free subscription" but there's no point when something else that's free is better. I can still get McAfee Enterprise for free and have been able to for about 10 years but I wouldn't simply because it's not effective enough and is a resource hog.

Not the best marketing strategy I've seen. I'd really like a mac but when I see those ads, even more especially true with the UK Mitchell and Webb ones I want to support the underdog "PC" and feel sympathetic and "Mac" seems a bit too smug and self assured and puts me off. Probably not what they were going for

I would also say go for eset smart security.. They ae doing a free trial so it means you can at lease get rid of MCAFEE just now and have a month worth of eset to make your mind up.. The biggest plus with it is it has a really small footprint and uses very little rescources
  • Thanks again. I'll have a look at help2go and see what they're recommending
