Charged by hire company for damage to van

Options
I hired a van for 2 days Friday - Saturday (inc) the van was delivered by the hire company and collected but not collected until Tuesday after the rental period. It would appear that the van was scratched after the rental period as during the rental period it was kept behind locked gates but after this period it was left in-front of the gates to allow the hire company access to collect it. I received a notification after the collection that there was damage (£1,200) and have since deducted this from my card. I notified them when they identified the damage that this was not there when I had finished with the van but they have still taken the money. On their Ts & Cs it states that they may take upto 3 working days to collect the van but how can I be liable for damage that occurred after the actual rental period ( a period that is out of my control).

Did you take photos of the van after you left it outside?

It's a difficult one as they only have your word that it was not damaged when you left it.

What did they say when you told them the damaged happened afterwards? I assume they are saying that the van in still in your care until the van is picked up.

Presumably there were checks done when it was delivered and no damage
if there is damage there now on collection i feel it would be down to you
There is nothing to show that the damage was not done friday - sunday but also until collected the van is under your care
It was under your control because you had the keys and took the decision to move it from somewhere safe to on the side of the road
