Virgin Media Chasing TV Box returned over 8 Years Ago!

Been with VM for over 20 years, have had TV broadband etc. from the start.
In 2016 I cancelled the TV service (Kept broadband) and returned the set-top box.
Now I am cancelling broadband and completely closing my account.
They are asking for the router and TV set-top box to be returned.
I have the router ready to go back but I sent the set-top box back over 8 years ago.
Their tone is if I can't prove I sent it back I will be charged.

Can they do this even after the TV service was cancelled and set-top box returned over 8 years ago?
I questioned if they never received it when they requested the return originally why did they not chase it up then, but they guy had no answer.

It’s just standard procedure to ask for the tv box and router etc. You just need to send back the equipment you have. Don’t worry!
