Undercharged LPG gas for 7 years

Please help. I rent from a tenancy company. I have LPG gas. I provide a gas meter reading every 3 months. I recently received a bill back dated to 2017. The tenancy company said they added the usage incorrectly and now I owe thousands. They admitted reading providing the wrong bills. I pay each month the bill they issue me. Do I have to pay the extra bill for their mistake?

I would assume that it's the same as gas or electric where back billing beyond 12 months isn't allowed.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. I'd have thought so, too, but does the same rule apply for static caravans and park homes for example, where the consumer isn't the direct customer of a utility company? Might OP be in that sort of arrangement?0
-
I doubt back billing would apply as they will not be an OFGEM regulated supplier. I would say that the standard 6 year, 5 in Scotland, statute of limitations would apply though.

I don’t think that is the case the OPs gas is supplied by their landlord not a licensed energy company and as such they are not regulated.Brie said:I would assume that it's the same as gas or electric where back billing beyond 12 months isn't allowed. There is certainly no obligation to pay any debt that is more than 6 years old (5 years in Scotland) but the remainder is probably not so easy to get out of. What evidence dd they have that they have failed to bill you the correct amount?0 -
It's ofgem that sets that rule and LPG isn't covered by them.Brie said:I would assume that it's the same as gas or electric where back billing beyond 12 months isn't allowed.

Thank you everyone. I do not have a gas contract. The gas is in tanks supplied by Calor gas. I've never signed a gas contract. They have just supplied a bill but without showing what the rate is. It is there mistake. I'd understand if the money was accidentally put into my account. Every bill I received I paid. For all I know is that are making it up0

You do have a contract. It may not be in the form of a paper document, but you've been paying for and receiving gas for seven years, so there's clearly a contract in place.Slugger69 said:Thank you everyone. You're absolutely right that they could be making it up, and I certainly wouldn't pay them anything extra until they've supplied documented evidence to show when and how much they've undercharged you.0 -
Starting point would be requesting every bit of information used for this new calculation.Slugger69 said:Thank you everyone. I do not have a gas contract. The gas is in tanks supplied by Calor gas. Agreed - make sure you’re not getting charged for your 2017 gas at today’s rates. As others have said, fairly sure the limit of debt is 6 years. So anything beyond 6 years you can tell them is outside the scope of conversation and you won’t be paying.0
