I did indicate what the payment was for, which should give some idea of the amount, but was not specific. I'm expecting to have to pay between £1000 and £2000, and as it is a restaurant I will be present when paying.

I notice that no-one has commented on whether ApplePay is more likely to be accepted than a direct payment. My thinking is that if the restaurant accepts ApplePay (it may not, of course) then FaceID and the like provide extra proof that I am the person attempting the payment and so it is not fraudulent.

I din't specify bank, etc, because there are several cards I could use, both credit and debit cards, and the debit cards are with several banks. So I have a choice if issues arise, but was trying to see if there was a geenral approach that works.

It's sound as though, should I have problems, best is to phone immediately from the mobile number they have for me. And that there is no useful way of getting the payment authorised in advance

I have made £50K MasterCard debit card payments online from Santander. They told me that is MasterCard's daily limit. I have had payments of about half that blocked, but they have removed the block when I phone them. They have told me that I cannot authorise payments in advance.
    £50K CC limit?
It does say debit not credit
So not relevant to Credit Card then... Which this section is about.
It is relevant in so far as Santander's procedure for blocking and unblocking credit card and debit card transactions will be the same. You cannot preauthorise. Phone them if and when a payment fails. It is also relevant in that the size of the payment is not likely to be a cause of concern unless it is outside your normal pattern of usage.
