Changing 2FA phone number

I keep a separate phone for 2FA.  If it stopped working I would need to change the registered number - but isn't that exactly what a fraudster would try to do - so what happens ?

You would need to change the number... normally you get backup codes for 2FA so you can authenticate if your phone stops working. The only way to change the number would be to use the device to authenticate or a backup code - this should prevent a fraudster as they would need access to the device.

Thanks.  I've not heard of a backup code - do you know what to do to set one up ?

Backup codes are normally issued when you enrol a service to your authenticator, i.e. when you first set up a service on the authenticator. Some applications allow you to generate additional backup codes at a later date, but you have to be able to log into the application to do this.

I store any backup codes issued at enrolment in my pasword manager. I use the 2FAS Authenticar in prefernce to the Google Authenticator because it requires a passcode to unlock the authenticator. This is essential if you take your phone out of the house. It also allows all your services to be backed up in a way that allows you to restore them all to a new installation of the authenticator on a new phone.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

If the phone fails, swap the working sim card into a new phone.
If the sim card fails, ask the mobile phone company for a replacement sim (with the same number)?

If your phone is stolen (along with the SIM), report it to your network, e.g. for 1p mobile:
