I've been trying to Google and search the internet for a solution but not coming up with much on my own.
Basically, my friend downloaded a song from a programme (;)) and after that she had a pop up saying that she was at risk from a 'backdoor trojan' and that she must download this software (and pay for it) to fix it. When she connects onto a website it stays at this web page and doesn't let her move away from it (well, it does but takes aaagggesss). After some searching I found a page which showed all the screen shots exactly what she was having, and basically its a scam. It also came up saying 'Virus Ranger'.
How does she get rid of this? She tried to download a programme to remove it, but her computer is taking ages and ages to do anything so this is quite time consuming. Also, the google searches said its better not to go on the internet.
Should she buy something from pc world/somewhere like that?
Also meant to add, there is an icon on her desktop and taskbar now also.
Thanks

would download AVG antispyware and antivirus (the free version) and then switch into safe mode (restart the computer and press f8 as it is starting up you then get an option to select safe mode) then run both of the above programs (safe mode stops a lot of the spyware ect from running and makes it easier to delete iirc?) you could also download crap cleaner and run that as well? after this has been done restart the computer and see if theres any improvement?

Be advised that some infections will corrupt or disable your resident security products so for completeness I have listed a few online scans that may help you:
Norton - http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/defau...
Panda - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/Ac...
Trend - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Has she installed a program ? If so you could first try systems restore to a prev date this shows you http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
Tells you how to change home page

Superantispyware, which is one of the bit's of software in the guide WILL remove it
the guide I have quoted is a free and easy to follow Full list of instructions compiled for users of this forum
it includes links to ALL the software you need and all the steps you should take
Systems Restore, the online scanners and the homepage change quoted above will NOT remove this infectionEx forum ambassador

The best advice I can give you is to go to this site:
http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/index.php?showtopic=1190
This is a post that you are asked to read first. Read it and follow the instructions, they are very comprehensive.
All the software you will be asked to download is above board and there are no hidden nasties in any of it.
After you have worked through these instructions you then start a new thread with the logs that you have been asked for. Then sit back and wait for a reply. It may take them 24 hours to get back to you.
Please thank the guys for their time at the end of it, and if you can afford to, a few quid donated really helps them, they are all volunteers and their service has proved to be invaluable for us.Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
You can also try the following to remove Spyware;
1. Ad-aware from :- http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
2. Spyware Bot from :- http://spywarebot.com

Doesn't seem all that different to this board, well the main difference being we don't get paid at all, voluntarily or otherwise."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Thanks guys, this all looks so complicated... I don't know a whole lot about computers and neither does she unfortunately
Does it make any difference that its a Windows Vista?
Its a relatively new computer, she downloaded 'a well known music download programme' lol (I know, I know...) and downloaded a song from it, so thinks it has came from there.0 -
tell her to go here
www.superantispyware.com
download the free version (blue button)
and then update and scan
it should deal with the infection on its ownEx forum ambassador

Uninstall it, (also edit it from your post, not allowed under forum rules), install superantispyware (couldn't be simpler to use). Go through Browntoa's malware removal guide for good measure. It's a simple step by step procedure."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
