My NAS backs up every night to another in a location many miles away.   So I might lose a days worth of stuff should my property be destroyed but no more than that.

Agreed that off-site backup is a good idea.

Gut reaction says that having a second property just for doing backups is a lot less money saving than a cloud storage solution

Not having a second property I wouldn't know the costs involved but I suspect higher than a monthly subscription to a Cloud backup service.
