Slat walls and log burner

Hi all, me again. We have a chimney breast that we’d like to use slat wall panels (or self fit individual slats) on to and then place a log burner infront of it.

My question is, do the slats need to be fireproof (if such things exist)?

Is there anything else I need to be wary of?

Is that a gas/electric fire currently in? If so be prepared to shell out ££££ on getting a HETAS certified installer to come around, assess, and than install. It took us nearly 8 weeks, approaching 3 different installers to finally get our done. Despite going for a cheap stove, the total bill was £3kish.

So I wouldn't worry about the wall/surround, it's finding some one to install the flue that's going to be major cost/issue. The amount of kit and complexity of running the flue from the door stairs living room, through the room above, and than existing out of the roof avoiding a roof lantern caused more than a bit of head scratching from all involved!!!

But nothing beats the feel, sound, smell of a log burner, gas/electric fires are very poor imitations of the real thing.

Wood burners have different specs on the distance to a combustible material, depending on the model. Wooden slats aren't fireproof, but can have a level of fire resistance. It still doesn't class them as non combustible.
You'll probably find you need around 300mm between the stove and the slats.

Hi and thanks - it’s a chimney so the flue will go straight up through it. Simple installation plus the gas is currently disconnected so will within the gas fireplace and supply out this evening before the gas is reconnected (BiL is Gas Safe - saves a lot of money!).

£3k is pretty cheap to be fair - last one was £5k though the one going here is £3,400

Thank you so much! I have plenty of space with the new hearth for the gap so that makes it easier for me to decide what to put behind.

You can get even closer with a rear heat shield on lower powered models.

Thanks - checked the spec sheet and it’s 150mm for the burner we’re getting.
    Thanks again!

"..te feel, sound, smell of a log burner.."

It's funny, people generally all want to reduce pollution, and kick up a fuss if water companies pollute, but not if it inconveniences them in the slightest.
