cd rom not playing

put in a disk,the green light flashes for a minute,then goes off,nothing happens,no message on screen,no drive shown in my computer

has my drive had its day i wonder

can you help please

Check that the drivers are installed for it... does it show up in hardware device eg right mouse click on My computer then click properties a window pops up (systems properties) click on hardware then device managers then click on cd dvd drives if it shows up there check its running and drivers installed

done this as advised,all that comes up under disk drive is

DISK DRIVES
ST 380012A

device working properly

tried the dvd drive tonight and the same thing green light on then goes off and nothing happens

if anyone can suggest anything its appreciated
