    And capacity isn't a binary thing (or something which doesn't change over time). "Do you want us to try advertising your house for sale" is not as "serious" as "sign here to actually sell it for £x".

    Thanks for all the comments...its difficult to think straight when angry.
    I wish the EA had been more open with the problems they were having instead of almost denying there were issues.
    So many people have to get half way through conveyancing before finding problems..there must be a better system

    This particular issue is the doctor being slow.

    That is perhaps because doctors try to be upbeat. Supposing the patient really is not up to making decisions, that’s not something that doctors want to say. 
    No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    My FIL had terrible trouble getting the doctor's letter as the GP did not want to commit to making any statement.  The fact that my MIL had been diagnosed with dementia a long time ago helped.  Without the medical diagnosis, a GP will not want to get involved in declaring their patient's capacity for financial transactions as they could be sued for making a wrong statement.

    I can see why there is a long delay here in getting this letter.
