Problems with SD card

After a bit of advice - keep getting a message on my phone saying your SD card needs formatting. What do need to do about this? If I format the card, it states that I will lose what's on it. The phone is a newish Xiaomi Note 12. Do I need to transfer the data to somewhere else? Thanks

    Hi,
Yes i would transfer the data to a computer, reformat the card and put the data back.
It migth be the card is failing, so might be prudent to get a new one.

    They're not.  They're cheap for a reason.

Although that being said, the Xiaomi Note 12 comes with 128Gb of storage on board, so unless you've moved it from another phone or you're taking more photos/video than you know what to do with, you probably don't need a separate card.

Note that Android will, upon formatting the SD card, probably try to "adopt" it, which will treat it as being extra storage in addition to the 128Gb.  This is fine, but it locks it to that phone.  Also note that if this was the case when you first installed it, you can't introduce it to another device as its encrypted.

However if you've turned the appropriate options on, the anything important will be in the online account anyway, so photos, contacts...

    Indeed.

It really annoys me that they are used in devices that have sufficient physical room for a full sized SD card which seem vastly more reliable!

I doubt there's any difference beyond the volume of plastic.
