Think i've had a scam MIB call.

Someone drove into the back of me 5 days ago. We both phoned respective insurance companies at time to report. His van needed towing, mine still drives.

My fleet manager has been away and I wanted to clarify processes with her before getting van repaired. I had a phone call 4 days ago from 3rd party insurance saying their drive admitted liability.

Fleet manager returned today and has organised repair and replacement vehicle and stated insurance company will contact me to discuss any personal injury claim etc... Shortly before her call I had a solicitor call me from my companies insure (Allianz) and asked about injuries (I have sore back and shoulder) and stated would be back in touch.

Five minutes later I had a phone call from MIB (supposedly) who state they are aware of the accident and wanted to clarify the details. They asked if I was aware the 3rd party had made a claim for whiplash, neck, wrist and shoulder issues, also tinitus. They asked if I was aware (I was not) and said that the claim was rejected because he was at fault but because he made a claim, the money (£3k to £6k) has been set aside, for which I need to make a claim.

She stated that we are both insured by Allianz and the solicitor assigned by them will not have my best interests at heart. Suggest using there own etc… Anyway, give them details of the accident, my name and address and NI number.

Now, I feel like a moron, I was at work with my mind on other things, my fleet manager said someone would call me and someone did. She put me through to their solicitor with a heavy thick Indian accent and by this time I was starting to get anxious, I made my excuses and told them to ring me tomorrow.

Im pretty sure it was not MIB, its a scam, but my main concern is me giving them personal information… is there anything I can do protect myself ?

It isn't the MIB, that is without a doubt.

Most the time you are talking to ambulance chasers rather than 100% fraudsters and as such they use names very similar to well known brands but with slight deviation... so MIB Assistance or MIB Help or something else that moves them 1 degree from actually claiming to be the MIB.

The main risk is you get added to the sucker list and so will now gets lots of calls about money owed to you for owning a diesel car, for commission on the finance for the cars you bought etc etc
