Credit card protection on purchase

I have to make a fairly large purchase of material with a company based in Europe (Czech Republic). I have never used them as suppliers before and I have made checks on their website, bought some samples, and searched for reviews (there aren't any but I would not expect to find them as it is a very sepecialized kind of material). I have know of them (without using them) for years. The material is actually lots of small decorated boards, each one costing about €10 but for a much larger total. Would a credit card protect me in case of issues, or would the purchase be considered as a series of small items each one less than £100?

If the total is over £100 I believe that will be treated as £100 and you'd be covered.  But do check what it's going to cost for import on all of this as it may make it much too expensive.  Too many people have been caught out ordering things and then getting a bill for import, taxes plus admin on processing that.

Buying from the EU does not incur import duties into the UK, assuming the goods are manufactured in the Czech Republic.

Duties would only be applied if the products you are buying originated from outside of the EU and were then sold on to you in the UK. This applies even if duties were paid when initially importing the goods into the EU.

Unit cost is what counts. No S75

If its listed as 40 x €10 then you would have no S75 protection as its the unit price that matters... if its a set that costs €400 then you may be fine.

Obviously if it simply doesn't turn up or such then you have Chargeback protection irrespective of if you use Credit or Debit card.

Thank you, it is a bit tricky because they are custom made small boards, each on is about €10, but together they make one set of 20  (so €200), and I but 20 sets

Thanks, another good piece of information! In fact this company is not even including VAT in their quote. I did question it and they just said that there is no VAT on it, whereas another company based in EU which I used previosuly, did. I am not VAT registered so it helps.

They are correct and wrong... as its an export sale for them they will legally charge you Czech VAT at 0% however when you import them into the UK as each package will be over £135 then you will have to pay UK VAT at 20%. In most cases the courier will clear the goods for you resulting in you repaying them the VAT, a fee for clearing the goods for you (normally a percentage of the taxes due with a minimum of £10-£15) and potentially duty.

Are you suggesting that this is a business to business transaction ?
If so not all consumer legislation would apply ....
