No Claims Bonus/Discount NCB/NCD after 9 years

I am with BMW insurance, they only appear to want to offer me proof of 9+ years NCB when I have 16 years. Having read forums on here I read that it doesn't make a difference after 9 years.
On renewal, BMW price has doubled so looking elsewhere my cheapest quote is for £626 when I use 16 years NCB and the exact same quote is £727 if I only apply 9 years.
If everyone is so sure that 9 years is the max, why am I seeing such a large difference in quote? Will be very frustrating to lose £100 because of this. It wouldn't be hard for any insurer to track the actual figure.

Do you have last year's renewal quote that says 15 years, plus this years that says there has not been a claim? Two years ago plus two additional documents?

Traditionally insurers maxed out at 5 years and then some started to go to 9 years but the con of it was that it took you to 9 years to get the same discount as others were offering at 5 years but it was a nice marketing message. Up to that time everyone was very open about what X years got you in terms of a percentage discount but around that time insurers also started not stating, potentially because people could see that at 8 years they got more discount else where. Since then NCD has become more complex in many companies, in some it's now a much lower discount but then the whole NCD thing is a bit silly given the vast majority of people have maximum NCD.
Ultimately any company is able to do anything they want with NCD, there are common themes in the industry but there are plenty of variances too. Its not an uncommon thing that insurers letters are capped at the maximum number of years they themselves honour and so those insurers offering unusually high max NCDs will be perfectly used to having to deal with proofs showing less and will be able to advise how to piece it together for them... eg send previous renewal showing 15 years and then this renewal showing no claims and they can add the two together.1 -
If the insurer only provides evidence of up to 9 years NCD I don't think there is anything you can do to force them to provide anything else.
