HELP PLEASE

My wife has had someone drive into the side of our car this afternoon. Our insurance on the car is due to expire at midnight tonight and was going to renew this evening - completely my fault for not sorting the renewal sooner.
It was definitely the other drivers' fault, they admitted as much when speaking to my wife afterwards. I have years of no claims (not protected) on my policy but I assume I have to admit this accident, even though it happened an hour ago, even if we claim off someone else's insurance.
Totally my fault for not renewing sooner but I am concerned my premium is going to be £££ because of this.
Would really appreciate some advice please!
Thank you.

Yes, you have to admit this accident.
But that is because you have to admit all accidents, regardless of when they occur. Nothing special about the last few hours, days or indeed weeks of a policy.
Your premium is likely to be more than you expect, but that will be because you have left renewal to the very last moment.
Martin Lewis has often written about this. There is a 'sweet spot' about four weeks before the old policy expires when the new policy will be best value. From then the cost of renewal rises steadily day by day to a peak on the very last day.

Even if you had already renewed you'd still have to declare it and it would have whatever impact its going to have... the advantage now is you can choose based on who won't load your premiums badly for it whereas had you already bought you'd be somewhat stuck with whatever that insurer's view on claims are.0

Thanks both, really helpful.0

Is the price difference between your current insurer's renewal and the prices you have found using comparison sites. If it's not too bad then I'd consider renewing with you rcurrent insurer.
