MPANs

Options
I bought a house at auction partially converted into 2 flats with new gas and electric supplies laid to one of them. I need to get suppliers and meters fitted. Those I have approached say they need MPAN numbers but I don't have them as they have never been connected. What can I do, as it stands I only have supplies to one flat and they are nearing completion?

  • Hello

your dilema is quite easy but utilities can be difficult with Jargon. An MPAn is a Meter Point Admin Number. The host electrical DNO ( Distribution network operator) such as United Utilities in Greater Manchester-Lakes, Scottish Power in Scotland and Merseyside /North Wales you can guess the other parts of teh UK,have to issue an Mpan for each electrical out take from their network. You have to request this from them, then you provide this to whom you want to pay for your power. The DNO gets use of system from who you pay for your usage, normally about 28-36 pound per year, this ensures that your supply is guaranteed ( as far as possible no electrical connetcion is sold as constant in the electrical supply act). The premises will already have an mpan, but if ist only got say 1No. 100amp supply the DNO will only issue 1No. MPan as the cable will be overloaded. Some unscruplious developers have a bulk meter arrangement in that all tennants have to share one bill!!! rather than they pay for an upgrade which can cost upwards of £1500+ vat. Provide the DNO with a postal address including seven figure post code and if the cable is up to it there is no problem with and MPAN. You may have to do thsi with the GAS if a suply is also needed in which case its an MPRN. Also www.ofgen.gov.uk is an invaluable source of information as is www.energywatch.co.uk any problems contact me through forum , i have 24 years in the utility sector . Thanks:j
  • Thanks very much for the reassuring advice and quick pick up and reply to my problem. Scottish Power / Manweb seem to be our DNO (Cheshire) so I will contact them. Who would it be for gas, National Grid?
    Thanks again
