Importing a vehicle
Options
Hi, am thinking of buying a vehicle in Holland. Currently on the road with number plate etc - all legal.
When/if it comes to UK how do I go about registering it and under what number?
It is a British army Austin Champ, released from Army in 1955/6/7 (ish). No trace on a collectors club registration site, so no idea of uk NUMBER PLATE. hOPEFULLY i WOULD GET (SOMEHOW) AN AGE RELATED BLAck/silver plate. No tax or MOT is needed. Anyone know anything about this procedure please. TIA

Follow the DVLA process https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk0

In the 1950s, DVLA hadn't been invented.
All "normal" (civilian) registrations were handled by local councils, but yours would have had an army number.
Almost certainly lost in the mists of time.0 -
Looks like a minefield re above connection... vat/duty.... I have the Army number, but that is useless0

If you can prove it's ex-UK (civvy or mil) reg, then there should be no UK duty or VAT to pay.
If you know the army plate, then you can search the records... https://merlinarchive.uk/ or https://www.rlcarchive.org/ - but they're not necessarily complete.
You should be able to get a Heritage Certificate from the chassis number that'd give you more info, and prove the age to DVLA.

Then it's just get a V55/5 pack from DVLA, fill that in, insure it on the chassis number/Dutch plate, and wait.
You'll get a pre-suffix age-related plate, and it'll be £0 historic tax and MOT exempt.
