Google and the Microsoft forums are the places to look regarding failed updates.

I eventually installed it, manually, from the update catalogue
it IS installed (according to Control Panel / programs / installed updates)
but the prompt is still there on the taskbar - asking me to restart to install KB5037771 !
I do this again -  with no change - the prompt is STILL there

The usual reason for large updates silently failing to install is lack of sufficient spare storage space.  Do you have enough? Can you clean up some temporary files?
Other than that the MS forums etc as advised above are best place to go.

Yes I have at least 700Gb of free space
    I have tried
    dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    This froze at 63%

    I used
    sfc /scannow
    This found no faults/errors

    Fixed it
I uninstalled the update that I manually added and left it to update itself AGAIN
    This worked eventually

I'm very surprised that you were unable to reimage from a backup? I've installed the May update on x64 Win11 23H2 without problem. Its Ok using SFC but you need to run scannow with switch restore health. For apps I subcribe to Revo Uninstaller Pro and for backups subscribe to EaseUS Home Backup. I keep at least two backups on an SD card plugged into the laptop and copies of them on an SSD partition. Been caught out a few times over the years but restoring the backup has always saved the day.

I do have backup but it's a pain in the neck to use

Glad you caught and fixed the problem. I asked my AI assistant what it knew about KB5037771 problems. Lots of citation links but I guess its academic now.
