Is it as easy as just contacting the bank and requesting statements? Do they charge for this?

Yes - send a DSAR if it's an older account
No, DSAR is freeSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

What's a DSAR?
The accounts I need info on only closed earlier this year.

I'm not sure it would result in you getting full bank statements though, and it sounds like a bit of a 'sledgehammer to crack a nut' approach. Have you actually approached the bank(s) involved to ask ?1 -
Data Subject Access Request... its your right under data protection legislation to ask for a copy of the data a company holds about you which they must provide free of charge.
What do you actually need the "statements" for? A DSAR will give you the data that would have been on the statements but not necessarily in the format of a statement... ie it could just be a continuous list of every transaction they hold rather than divided up into monthly documents with opening and closing balances etc. As such a DSAR may not be appropriate if you need it for a mortgage application or something.
How quickly do yo need it? If time isn't of the essence then do a DSAR, if the format works, great if not then you can go back and ask about ordering statements.1 -

Which bank?
They have to offer to provide you with 5 years worth of transactions on request when you close a bank account. No need for a DSAR1 -
