Renew car insurance with an open claim

Options
Good afternoon, in September I had an accident. Pretty straightforward, I hit a car in front of me in a stop and go at the traffic lights.  My insurance expires at the end of May, so I phoned my insurance to renew the policy and I found out that the premium is more than doubled because the claim is still open as the other part is claiming injuries. Speaking with all the departments of my insurance I found everything extremely confusing ( including refusing the pictures of the other car) therefore I decided to look around. Being extremely honest when requesting a quote (I included the the claim is still open) , I found much cheaper options.
Do I have any obligations towards my insurance or do I need to worry about the open claim? Or I can get my insurance somewhere else without problem?
Thanks for the help

Can go elsewhere as long as you've correctly declared the claim and your NCD as a consequence.

With Home insurance its more difficult to switch mid claim, not because you owe your former insurer anything but because new insurers dont want to take something on with work ongoing but the same doesn't apply to Motor as its often the Third Party element that goes on for months/years

You have no obligations to renew with your current insurer. Just be fully open and honest with any prospective new insurer.
  • Thanks for your replies, much appreciated. As I am a little bit anxious I have declared that the claim is still open/ unresolved with the new insurer. For the same reason I wanted to be sure that the old one can't get back to me claiming something back because I left. Or better, I haven't renewed with them.

Your commitment to each other is the 12 months of the policy, nothing more. They're under no obligation to offer you renewal terms, you are under no obligation to accept them if they do.

The only time they'd come after you regarding a claim would have nothing to do with you renewing or not but if they later discovered you were drink driving at the time of the incident or such.
