As DullGreyGuy said a way back, you were dealing with the front line who are there to answer the phone. Don't let it stop there. Persist as calmly as you can.

I had this problem when someone reversed into my stationary car in a car park and had a kind gent give me his number and address as witness. That took 5mts to resolve as the only reply was 'it's not been delt with yet' ...... I kept phoning every few weeks. Was told 'aw you may as well let it go now' ............ eventually one kind soul told me it was on the wrong desk in a different deptartment!

So being told the worst scenario isn't necessarily what will happen - as you can see from the comments. But don't leave it at that if it looks as though that's the way it's going.
