ADP for 16 year old, help please! (Scotland)

Hello all,

I’m really hoping someone could help explain how my daughter’s (16) Adult Disability Payment could affect my Universal Claim?

Current situation is I work part time (over minimum wage so no min hours or extra work commitment enforced). She’s currently in school full time and will continue next year.

She was recently diagnosed and the claim for her disability payment has just been approved, but I’ve heard conflicting information on how this would affect my UC claim.  We are in Scotland and the majority of information I can find relates to England.

If anyone has any experience or could point me to information I would be super grateful,  I have reported this change via telephone to UC but as it’s a mid month change they couldn’t really help - I’ll be advised in due course.  I’m unsure if this will leave me with less for my next payment or if I’m just panicking but I’d like to get ahead of any issues.

Thanks again to anyone who could offer information.

Pinkdon

It would make you eligible for the additional disabled child elements of UC (amounts depend on the ADP award):

    https://www.gov.uk/universal-credit/what-youll-get

It will not reduce your UC.

If you care for her for 35hrs a week, the carers element could be added to your UC entitlement:
    https://www.turn2us.org.uk/get-support/information-for-your-situation/adult-disability-payment-and-other-help/i-get-the-daily-living-component-of-adp-what-else-can-i-get#:~:text=Universal Credit Carer Element,to £198.31 per month.

(You will need to make UC aware if the carers element applies, put a c of c note in your journal, etc)

EDIT;  Amended to a more relevant link for UC - thanks poppy

I'm not liking that link you posted because it goes into more details about Tax credits than it does UC. It doesn't give any payment details for the disabled child element of UC either.

If her ADP includes the Enhanced daily living part then you'll be entitled to the higher disabled child element, which is £487.58/month.

If it's any other rate then you'll be entitled to the lower disabled child element which is £156.11/month.

Carers element will also increase your maximum UC entitlement to an extra £189.31/month.

Both will be paid from the assessment period in which her award started from.

To claim carers element, log into your journal (assuming you have one) then report a change of circumstances. Look through the list and click "caring for someone" and then report caring for her for at least 35 hours per week.

Many thanks to you both for taking the time to reply.  I think it's the fact that its classed as Adult Disability rather than child which had thrown me, I believe I earn too much to apply for any carer's elements (over £151 per week).  I'm just relived to hear than my claim shouldn't be reduced, I had heard that it may stop altogether which was worrying me and lead to my original post.

    Thanks again

There is no cliff edge earnings limit for the carers element in UC, you can earn any amount. If you claim the carers element it would increase your maximum UC amount, this maximum amount is then reduced by your earnings as normal.

Oh, thank you for that information.  That's useful as I was pretty sure I wouldn't qualify based on my earnings but I think I'll need to have a deeper dive into this as I'm obviously not understanding correctly.  I'm just finding it all a bit of a minefield as most of what I'm reading online doesn't refer to Disability Payment but Disability Living Allowance/PIP and l think I'm just confusing myself following random links.

The earnings limit applies to carers allowance. You don't need to claim carers allowance to be entitled to carers element of UC.

Think of the ADP as PIP because the same rules apply so if you see something that says daily living PIP, then daily living ADP is the same. For your UC the same rules apply nationally anyway.
