British Gas - backdated bill

My parents did not receive a bill from British Gas for 12 months even though they continually requested one. They have now received a bill (after 12 months) for over £3,000. Is it true that you don't have to pay a British Gas bill if you haven't had a bill for 12 months?

Not quite, no. They could argue for any bill over 12 months old, but they do need to pay for any energy used in the last 12 months.https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/what-do-if-you-get-back-bill#:~:text=If%20your%20gas%20or%20electricity,not%20been%20charged%20for%20it.
Of course the responsible thing to have done would be to take their own readings and put money aside for the bill that they knew would be coming. Have they done that? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I believe the bill has now been paid. I will find out from what period they have been charged. Thanks.0
