mis sold solar panel insurance

I've been contacted by a company called writenwords they say if I pay them £800 that they can get £12000 compensation for the fact that the installers of my solar system went into liquidation, then started up another company using assets from previous company. Is this a scam.

Suggest you amend your topic title, nobody has sold you anything so far.

Do you actually have the system installed and working?

If so, then why do you think you may be entitled to any sort of compensation if you have what you paid for?

There is something called advance fee fraud.    If you ever watched an episode of Hustle you would know the routine.   They find a mug, they play to the mug's greed by offering something that is too good to be true but their greed cannot see that but to get it, they have to pay something first.

I'm not saying that is the case here.  I am just explaining how advance fee fraud works to help you understand that subject.

On to your post, there are some signs I would question
    a) cold call.   Many cold calls are scams nowadays.
    b) who are they going to get to pay you the compensation if the company that installed them no longer exists?  For you to get money, there needs to be a party at the other end paying it.
    c) Once your system is installed and working, the company that installed it is irrelevant.   So, if your system is working, how was it missold?
    d) your thread title mentions insurance.  Where does insurance come into this?

If you pay me £250 I can tell you that this is likely nonsense. I will then save you £800

Why are you engaging with them at all? At best you're giving money to someone hoping they will get you something with no guarantees, at worse It's advanced fee fraud where they will just take your money. How would they get you £12,000 from a company that doesn't exist if it was liquidated and the new owners of the assets have no liability?

Bin the paperwork, delete and block the emails, block the number on your phone

The only "reclaiming" they are doing is milking people like you

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Funny enough, my installer also went bust. It also came with 'insurance' that covered problems up to 2 years. Basically to cover bad workmanship, non delivery etc. Luckily, I have had no problems with the system since it was installed 15 months ago. I got told back in January / February this year that because the main company that I employed to do the work was not permitted to claim that it was insured through their insurance scheme, even though the electrician that actually did the work was a member of their scheme, the insurance was void. Go figure.

tbh I really can't be bothered to take it further. The electrical installation is a very good install (I'm a sparky myself) and if anything went wrong, I'd sort it myself. But any insurance needs vetting before contracts are exchanged and I would take it all with a pinch of salt anyway. As Nasqueron mentioned, if you have the goodies then forget it. I certainly wouldn't be taking on yet more debt.

I've been contact by them too and am stringing them along for as long as I can!! They claim the 'deposit' is refundable as it is paid through a company called Square. I rang Square and they know nothing about refundable payments! When asked where the money - £12,600 in my case -comes from, they claim it is paid by the Government for compensation because the installation company has gone out of business and therefore can't honour the warranty. I said that my system had already paid for itself so why was I entitled to a full refund? I got a very long winded reply.
Yes, they sound very plausible - they are good at their job! But just ask yourself, why would you be eligible for a full refund for a very minor infringement. It sounds like a duck, it walks like a duck.....
So far I've managed to keep them on the phone for over 3 hours and I'm expecting another call tomorrow. That's 3+ hours less to prey on others! Oh, and I've reported the case to Action Fraud.
  • Nialucasnia, did you go any further with them?  It does sound too good to be true but also plausible with all the solicitors ads about it that I see.

Benk92, I take it you never went further...other than stringing them along - haha.
