I am no expert but do have some gold purchased @ £1,550/ troy ounce. It was recently near £2k but has dropped back to about £1,880.
Speculation is that it could hit $3K dollars by the next year, even speculation of $4K dollars.
From my research you are not going to make a huge amount of money unless you are Warren Buffett.
I bought it because I wanted to have some physical gold.
There was a good article in the Sunday Mail on 12 May.

Agree, gold price should goes up for next few year, as a hand push europe and asia to the war hell for their profits.
and major country realized gold is the best way to avoid financial punishment.
phisical gold is nice, but you have to storage fee for the bank.
which website is the best for gold investment then?
in the worst senario, we can keep a few pounds in hand instead of inflation for nothing.

You can buy a Gold ETF ( that tracks the price of gold) on many investment platforms.
iShares Physical Gold ETC | SGLN - for example

As nobody can see into the future, then who knows ?

What you're doing sounds to me more like speculation than investment. I would guess that you gave up on shares because your speculative share purchases didn't give you a quick profit. If it's really investment that you're interested in, you should think in terms of buying and holding for the long term. And gold should probably be only a small part of your investment portfolio. Investment doesn't necessarily need much learning, as you could simply buy one global tracker fund or target date fund, and hold it for a long time.
