Travel insurance when waiting for medical test results

I'm trying to get travel insurance for a trip I've already booked but am awaiting test results for a (non life threatening) medical condition.

I fully expected to have that condition excluded from cover, but StaySure tell me ALL pre-existing conditions will be excluded if I buy insurance from them, even though the other conditions are stable.

Is this typical? Has anyone been able to buy travel insurance while waiting for a test result without having all their other medical conditions excluded?

In think this might be typical.  My wife was on a waiting list for a 24 hour cardiogram.  We could not get insured for potentially an undiagnosed condition.  The waiting list was four months.  In the end we went private, the test was OK and no further action was required.  So we managed to get insured.

    Kind Regards,

I was in a similar situation in the lead up to my April holiday.  I just had to keep badgering my doctor's surgery to get the test results asap, so that I could sort my travel insurance.
How long before you go on holiday?

Four days!  Had held off sorting out the insurance until now in the hope of test results coming through, but that seems unlikely.

Despite insurance effectively being gambling insurers really dont like uncertainty. As a consequence if you have symptoms, no diagnosis and tests are on going most will run for the hills rather than provide cover.

It does somewhat depend on where you really are in the diagnosis/treatment cycle. I have 6 monthly blood tests for one of my conditions and the consultant letter normally take a month to turn up but in 25 years my meds haven't changed and they only changed 25 years ago because of an improved delivery mechanism, really they haven't changed in 30 years. Similarly recently had arthritis diagnosed in one of my fingers, technically was waiting test results (MRI) but it was only to determine the severity to agree the treatment plan (in the end, no treatment) but the questions insurers ask is if I can walk without using a frame etc. These sorts of things you typically can get an insurer comfortable with though.

I had this problem with staysure 2 years ago, but all clear insured me. I was covered by them for all my medical conditions despite waiting for test results

  • We took out Travel Insurance with Staysure, a renewal, it went up from £160 to £180 which was ok, but then when I declared as I know you should that my husband was being monitored by MRI for a possible lung problem ( he had no symptoms I hasten to add, this was just precautionary), it went up to £401.  The closest condition I could get in their drop down box was a lung nodule.  Thank fully he has now been told that his recent scan is all clear and there is nothing there, so he is discharged from further monitoring.  Rang Staysure to advise and ask for a refund and for them to remove this condition.  They are going to comeback to me after they get an answer from their Pricing Dept!  We haven’t travelled since renewing and haven’t made a claim.  Seems fair to me to get a refund, after all they insist you tell them of any new conditions and then charge you, so it should work both ways. Has anyone else had this issue and if so did they get a refund? Many thanks
