Hi all just recently bought this house and wonder what the issue is above the front window

Fortunately, there appears to be some self corbelling (as evidenced by the stepped crack & repointing), so not a priority job. Have a look at the other windows & doors to see if they are also suffering from the same problem.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
