Regular Payments Without CPA?

I have had to cancel some recurring payments to debt management companies and most were on my bank app's list. One wasn't though so I contacted the bank and they said there isn't a continuous payment authority in place, the company is manually taking a payment each month.
Is that legit?
I had assumed that if a company was taking regular payments from a debit card (i.e. not a direct debit) then it was a CPA. If they can just store my card details and take it manually when they want then what is the point of CPAs?
I have contacted the company and am waiting to hear back but it's a bit concerning to find I have no control through the bank - the bank said the only way I could stop it is to get a new debit card.
If this is a legit practice, is there any way to know when I'm giving my debit cards to a company if it's for a CPA or if they're going to take the payments manually?
Thanks.

Not all CPA's show as one.
So bank can simply, still block the payment. May require manual intervention. Other option is now you have told them to stop the payments, then any further taken can be claimed back under a chargeback (so long as they are using card details) Yo uwill just have to inform bank each time you see one to start with.
Just be aware of the implications of doing such. As stopping payments @ bank end is in effect you breeching any agreement with them & they could then take the legal route on the funds.Life in the slow lane0 -
Thanks for the reply.
The bank specifically said it wasn't a CPA and that they can't block it.0
