PayPal Authorised Transaction Fraud

Hi, this is a bit long-winded but the crux of it is... Beware of PayPal. They appear to be unfit for purpose and offer zero protection against fraud.

Having disputed 2 very odd, high value transactions (identical £336.14 payments only 4 mins apart) from Gamer2Gamer (a site I don't have an acc with) PayPal have shown themselves to be utterly incompetent when dealing with cyber fraud.

After receiving 2 separate emails notifying me of my payment to Gamer2Gamer I contacted PayPal to inform them of this unauthorised activity. They were asked twice to cancel these transactions but ignored me & processed them anyway. I could see they were pending payments on my bank account (my bank acc details were present on my PayPal acc) so the bank reversed them. Oddly, there was 4 days difference between the date of my supposed purchases and the time the money was due to leave my account - not normal, right?

The dispute has gone back & fourth with PayPal who have rejected my claims 3 times, saying the transactions look genuine & that the seller claims the digital items purchased (Razer Gold, whatever that is...?) have been delivered & redeemed, leaving me with negative PayPal balance of £672.28. I've also raised a ticket with G2G who also claim everything is above board but have provided no info as to the user ID or other details regarding the purchaser's account.

I'm now receiving emails & phone calls everyday from Paypal chasing payment.

PayPal also claim that my IP address is linked to the transactions, hence their approval. How is this possible when there is no trace of these purchases anywhere, on any device in my home? It's unbelievable that these transactions were not red flagged as unusual. Clearly fraudsters are smarter than PayPal or Paypal are complicit in allowing fraud on their platform.

An official complaint has now been logged along with the details sent to Action Fraud & the Financial Ombudsman Service have escalated this to an official complaint & are also investigating.

I'll be closing my acc ASAP & I'd recommend everyone else do the same before you're scammed & left unprotected by Paypal's inept due diligence.

  • PS. I can also see that there are loads of similar complaints to mine on PayPal's (.com & .co.uk) Trustpilot pages. Surely not a coincidence...?

Hard to give a proper answer, but the site appears to be associated with in-game purchases etc.

Do you have anyone in your household who may have used (or expressed a desire to use) this type of service ?

Ignore harassing messages from paypal. They tried that with me when my bank did a charge back for concert tickets that was cancelled.
I just deleted my paypal account and the harassment stopped.
