I will, against my better judgement,
Don't do anything against your better judgement! If you're not interested in how much money they owe or to whom, don't open it...
    Good advice... thanks.

Did you mark them "Not known at this address"?  If not, it might be worth doing so on future correspondence.
    Yes.

I should have made it clear in my original Post, ALL envelopes received so far have been marked 'Return to Sender', 'Not known at this address' & latterly - as they continued - 'NEVER lived at this address'... all to no avail!

If another envelope arrives from this latest Return Address - 'PO Box 1642, Northampton, NN1 9LP' - and is not marked '... addressee only' I will, against my better judgement, open it and see where it gets me...!
I would open them regardless of any wording on the envelope it is no a criminal offence to ignore that statement if the person does not live at your address and the letter has your address on it. It would be different if it had been accidentally put though your letter box but that is not the case.

Frankly if any one was using my address I would want to know exactly what they are trying to use it for and on the rare occasions that this has happened I have opened all of them.

I have posted the following elsewhere on the forum.

I kept getting letters for a previous owner from what I assume was a grant awarding body. I kept returning the letters with Not Known at this address.
Finally I too became fed up and as well as returning to sender on the front, on the back I wrote something like the following as there was enough room.
This property was sold by the addressee in 2011. The current owners are not the addressee nor am I. The previous tenant was also not the addressee.

Or something like that. After that, the letters stopped.
If you have enough room on the back of the envelope, I would write something along the lines of: The addressee has never been one of the two owners of this property I am not the addressee.  (And if true) you could write, I am the current owner of this property.
    Or something like that.
This might prompt the sender to investigate further. This may help.

I kept getting letters for someone else at my address (not the previous occupants I bought from) and although I kept sending them back as not known they kept arriving back again. I even taped several together and the whole bundle came back.

In the end I opened them all, and one contained several letters and documents stapled together which were to and from the company involved.

A quick look through and I found a letter to the company to say that they were moving and gave the company their new address!!! Incredible!

The problem is that people who are in massive debt also send letters back marked not known, so the debt collectors don’t know who to believe. Eventually someone will realise and put the name address info on the GAIN (gone away information network) and they should stop.
Surely these people know what the Electoral Roll/Register is? Why not write to the person(s) registered at the address, asking if they have any knowledge/information???

Never heard of GAIN - is that a real thing?
    Definitely a real thing!

  • The problem is that some people lie. I moved into a house where the previous occupant had huge debts. Debt collectors often came to the door and simply did not believe me when I told them I was not the person who owed them money. Although I resented having to show them my passport, in the end it was the only way to get rid of them
