Our Samsung tablet SMT 800 has swollen alarmingly pushing the screen away from the body at the ends. We think it's the battery that is swelling and want to remove it in case it bursts or leaks.
It still works but a bit slow.
Is there a way to remove the back panel?
Or how can we make it safe please?

That does sound like battery failure.
Swapping them is fiddly. Advice from google.

Just buy a cheap replacement battery and fit it.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

There is a very real risk of fire, and removing the battery could cause a fire as the battery is already damaged. Pryng or twisting the battery to get it out of the compartment could start a fire.
I would recommend you prepare a steel container with a steel lid - something like an old cake tin or biscuit tin that you can place the battery straight into when you have removed it. You should also wear eye protection (ideally a face shield) and gloves. Old clothes (cotton NOT man-made fibres) would also be sensible.
The container needs to be sealed tight and disposed of as hazardous waste. If you put it in your household waste or normal recycling you could cause a very serious fire and even kill someone.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.4 -
Thank you Tacpot12 I have successfully removed the battery and removed it to a place of safety. I will dispose of carefully next time I go to the tip.

Only if the 'tip' is actually a recycling centre that specifically has facilities for battery recycling. Do not dump it into landfill.2

Thank you outtatune, yes it is a recycling tip.1

Drain all the power out of the device before attempting to remove the swollen battery it's gas inside the battery 🔋 so do not pierce the membrane, safety first dispose of faulty battery securely it can still cause fires.1
