Telematics insurance with youngster as a named driver
Options
Hi, my son has just passed his driving test, and we're adding him to my wife's car insurance. On the comparison sites, Hastings YouDrive (with Telematics) is the cheapest. What I don't quite get is that it says the main driver must have the app installed on their phone and named drivers are not scored. Yet in our case the main driver is my wife, and presumably the telematics are being used because we have a young driver named on the policy. So wouldn't it make more sense for the young driver to have the app installed? Obviously the black box is there all the time, but can anyone clarify for me what the app actually does, and whether I'm right that it would be my wife who has the app installed?

Will my named drivers get a score?
No, we won't score named drivers and they don't need to download the app, but we do use data from the tab, so if someone else is driving it may impact your price.

Thanks, I read that too, but it doesn't really answer my question - I'm querying why that is the case, because it doesn't make sense?0

If you haven't bought yet, how does that compare with a separate Marmalade Named Young Driver policy?

Marmalade is a LOT more! Hastings is ~£1,100, marmalade is £3,200!!0

My take on this would be that, main driver gets scored. Others do not. But they will soon pick up who is driving most & that may cause problems if it is son....
But this policy is being touted to most people. It was cheaper for me. But no way am I having anything fitted to car.Life in the slow lane0 -
We wouldn't be fronting, me or my wife will drive it more than our son.0

As the main driver is your wife the policy is probably not suitable for your son as he is a named driver.
We've just been through this for my daughter and the telematics policies had so many caveats and restrictions we sacked it, cancelled an existing policy and found a policy at a sensible price with daughter as a named driver.1 -
The policy is designed to the main driver. It is not designed to cover the named driver so does not appear to be relevant for what you want.

The telematics will record all driving. So if your son does something he shouldn't it'd impact your partners score.
I don't think they necessarily care who is doing the driving as long as the driving meets their standards.
