Couriers legal responsibilitie

A large well known couriers accepted breaking and not delivering an item from France. The item also incurred duties coming into the UK. The company reimbursed me for the value of the item but not the cost of delivery or the duties. They argue that my level of delivery doesn't entitle me to a refund. This surely cannot be true? I paid for a service but didn't receive the service I paid for . Am i correct to pursue them for a refund?
