Thanks, does it have to be a PH2 screwdriver?

The box is not the original one, so it does not say anything about the type. The head is just a cross, but the bit looks similar.
Do you have an image? At first glance both PoxiDriv and Philips are a cross but they are different

What is the difference between Philips and Posidriv

I've just had a close look at the bit and it's the pozidriv. could that be the problem?

If the screw is Philips it will as it will stop the bit going as deep into the screw head

Plasterboard screws are Phillips because as Alderbank said the cam out is useful in certain cases. Most woodscrews are Pozi in the building trade. Phillips bits can be used on Pozi screws, but not the other way round.

Have a really close look at the shank.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Hadn't realised it was Philips - I'd assumed it was PZ1 'cos they're clearly smaller than PZ2.
Is it chosen for the cam-out feature, do you think (didn't know about that either)? Again, I assumed the choice was just because the heads are physically smaller/less meaty than normal screw heads being 'bugle' shaped, so needed a smaller bit.
It's not just a size choice?

The cam out of the Phillips drive is a disadvantage for most screws in the building trade, but with fixing plasterboard it's useful. Plasterboard screws are harder and more brittle, so the head can snap easier if you hit a knot. The cam out is also said to help not drive the head in too deep, but that really can't be relied on. The best thing for that is to use a depth stop drywall bit.
Probably the best thing about the Phillips drive is that it self centres better than the Pozi. Really handy when you're holding the sheet with one hand and you can pick up the screw with the magnetic tip and fix it while still holding the board.

Why not just take one of the screws to a hardware or tools retailer and ask the staff "what kind of bit and screwdriver fit's this please?".

    Then buy one or both.
