Beds

I am looking to buy a new double bed. Where can I get a good standard one for around £400 - £500?

Can't help on the bed but...
When, about 10 years ago I bought a memory-foam mattress topper it changed me sleeping. I had a lumpy mattress, the leg of my frame was broken and propped up with books for about £70 then it changed my night time comfort.

I will second the topper, I bought one and helps me even though my mattress was £500 it wasn't the right type for me, I am a side sleeper so ned it soft enough for my shoulder and hip to sink into.

If you want to be a money saver, I question “new”. 10+ years ago I bought a quality brand double bed local to me on eBay for under £100. Advertised as rarely used in guest bedroom and they were downsizing; I could see they were selling other stuff too. Transported dismantled in medium hatchback.
Pretty sure a new £400/500 wouldn’t still be as comfortable. Facebook marketplace is more useful now but principal is the same

Our local hospice has several charity shops one of which specialises in furniture. They sell bed frames and will also sell you a brand new mattress if you need one. The frame prices start at around £60 for a double. Our local Emmaus branch also sell frames and are priced even more keenly. If you pop over to the Shop Charity Store in '24 thread and post asking for tips for your local area I'm sure you'll get some very useful help.

I've heard good things about ikea mattresses - they stock some standard UK sizes now and you can get kitted out with both a mattress and frame within budget if you want a one stop shop. Being in the ikea maze is a bit of a marmite experience, but at least there's the opportunity to try out the options in person.
