Danske bank switch offer

Hi all so I do often hop around banks taking advantage of the bank switching offers. I'm currently looking at danske bank who are offering £200 to switch to one of its accounts however it says you have to live in northern Ireland or be an account holder for one of its savings accounts. I live in the UK but my question is could I open a savings account and then go ahead and take advantage of the offer or does the savings account already have to have been open for a period of time?

There's a thread on the Danske bank offer here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6523640/danske-200-switch-offer-18-4-24-ni-only/p1
New customers to Danske need to be resident in NI - this includes applicants for savings accounts. If you find a savings account without this restriction then please let us know as we would be very happy to know about it! Otherwise if you're already an existing customer (ie. you hold a savings account from when it was possible for non-NI residents to open them) then you can apply directly for the current account without needing to wait.

It's a policy which began decades ago under Northern Bank, and was briefly paused after the Danske takeover, then put back after a load of MSE'ers joined and did the minimum possible with them to get a monthly reward. Danske even contacted some of them and inferred the customers were not making good enough use of their accounts! The other major Northern Irish banks (Ulster Bank and AIB NI) don't have such a policy, but they're not alone in restricting new accounts to customers relatively local to a branch - Cumberland Building Society won't allow new applications from customers outside their operating area.4

There is no law that requires any business to offer their services to all of a geographic, legislative or other area, Numerous building societies limit their accounts to a limited list of post codes, for example. Many banks don't offer accounts to people not resident in the UK, and even if resident, they are excluding some nationalities, e.g. US citizens, for some reason or another.
The limitation of the Danske Bank offer to NI residents only has nothing to do with Brexit.

If you have switched away the current account you would have to trust in the redirection service to be able transfer out as you need
to have a debit card to change payee
