Any VOIP platform such as Whatsapp or Facetime will be free if you have a decent wifi connection where you are going to be and you both have mobile phones.0

For the former then a messaging app like WhatsApp etc depending on preferred platforms will be free when on wifi. For the later then use VOIP on wifi which will cost the same as if you were calling them from inside the UK0 -
Roaming charges in Turkey are very high so make sure you turn roaming off on your phone before leaving the UK. The last time I went to Turkey I had forgotten and ran up £10 in background data charges just in the first hour before I remembered.
For mobiles most people use WhatsApp or Facetime these days but for landlines I just put a £5 credit onto my Skype account and use the hotel/restaurant's wifi.
For mobile data services SIM cards are still very expensive in Turkey

Yes, it's not a very well publicised benefit of the Microsoft 365 subscription.
You should be able to see an account summary including remaining free minutes here: https://secure.skype.com/portal/settings/package
I believe that calls get cut off when the free minutes expire and you have to redial with some credit but I haven't been in the situation myself.0 -
You can get an 'e-sim' with unlimited data really cheap and it allows you to choose which country. I use Revolut - they give you 100mb free for your first time. I paid £4 for a week of unlimited calls and data compared to the £7 a day I was charged by Vodafone for using phone abroad.
